Pet Names

July 2, 2022

Did you know that Max was the best male name of 2021? We love seeing the cute and funny names people come up with for their animal companions! It turns out that recent studies have uncovered some pretty interesting statistics about pet names. A local vet offers some highlights below.

Top Names

Max was the number one boy name for dogs, as mentioned above. Other high scorers were Charlie, Milo, Buddy, Rocky, Bear, Leo, and Teddy. Among the girls, Bella was number one, followed by Luna, Lucy, and Daizy. , Zoe, Lily, Lola, Baily and Stella.

Cat-egory

As for our feline friends, the best girl names were Luna, Bella, Lily, Lucy, Nala, and Kitty. For the kids, the best options were Oliver, Leo, Milo, Charlie, Max, and Simba.

Medieval Pets

Edward, Duke of York wrote a list of 1,100 names of hunting dogs. Some, like Sturdy, Troy, Whitefoot, Hardy, and Bo wouldn’t seem out of place today. Then we have Clenche, Bragge, Nosewise, Amiable and Filthe, which would probably surprise some!

As for our feline friends? We all know that Fluffy has been bossing people around for thousands of years. It turns out that most of the kittens were named Gilbert in medieval England. Across the English Channel, cats often responded to Tiber or Tibert.

Celebrity Pet Names

The trend of naming pets after celebrities isn’t likely to go away anytime soon! The names Taylor and Taylor Swift dropped in popularity in 2021. Pets named Jennifer Lopez, Aretha Franklin, and A-Rod joined the long list, along with the first feline Doja Cat. And while we’ve been seeing kittens named Oprah for a while, it’s worth noting that those numbers have increased over the past year.

Historic Pets

The unfortunate Anne Boleyn had a dog named Purkoy, a translation of the French “pour quoi” meaning “Why?” One of the oldest records of pet names would be that of the 14th century knight who had a dog named Parceval!

Choosing a Name

Choosing the right name for a pet can be quite difficult. Sometimes you might find the perfect name, only to find it just doesn’t fit your furry friend. Baby name generators can be helpful, but you can also try looking up word translations that remind you of your pet’s personality, history, or appearance.
