Apartment Care for Kitties

November 15, 2019

Do you and your feline pal live in an apartment? Fluffy is a great pet for apartment dwellers. She’s clean, quiet, and doesn’t really need too much space. However, you’ll still need to take some steps to keep your kitty happy and healthy. Read on as a Jacksonville, FL vet lists some apartment care tips for people with cats.

Toys

Cats need stimulation to be truly happy. Provide your frisky little buddy with lots of fun toys, and take time to play with her every day.

Safety

Kitties certainly have a knack for getting themselves into trouble. Keep anything that could be dangerous, such as medicines, household cleaners, plastic bags and ties, and small or sharp objects, in a spot Fluffy can’t reach. Also, make sure your windows and screens shut tightly.

Plants

We always recommend that cats live indoors. This goes double for apartment kitties, because of the increased risk of traffic and injury. To give your furball a taste of nature, set out some pet-safe plants for her to nibble on and hide behind. (Bonus: this will also help keep your place looking and smelling nice.) Check the ASPCA site here for a list of suitable plants. If you have a screened porch or patio, put plants there, and turn it into a catio by adding a cat tower and some toys.

Comforts

Sometimes little things in life make the biggest difference. Offer Fluffy some kitty furniture to explore and hide in. If your place is small, get your feline pal some vertical space, like a cat tower. Leave a light on for your pet if you’ll be out after dark.

Veterinary Care

Veterinary care is crucial to Fluffy’s health and well-being! Follow your vet’s appointment schedule.

Litterbox

Litterboxes don’t do much for anyone’s décor. Consider buying or making a custom piece that will contain Fluffy’s powder room. You’ll find great options and ideas online!

Views

Kitties love looking out windows and watching what’s going on outside. Make sure your furball has at least one spot with a good view. It’s worth noting that many apartments have blinds. Some cats will make themselves a little ‘door’ in the blinds. This can be dangerous, as Fluffy could get tangled up. You may want to get a different window treatment.
