Beach Safety for Dogs

One of the best things about living in Florida is our beautiful beaches, with their powder white sand and blue-green waters. Many of our canine friends absolutely love going to the shore for some fun in the sun. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first: beaches can be quite dangerous for dogs! Read on as a Lakewood, FL vet offers some beach safety tips for Fido.

Heat

Heat is one of the biggest dangers for Fido on the beach. It’s very easy for our canine pals to overheat when running around on hot sand. Bring plenty of water for your pet, and keep a close eye on him. If he is panting heavily, immediately give him water and get him out of the sun. In summer, take your pooch to the beach in the mornings or evenings, when it’s not as hot outside.

Paws

If you’ve ever walked on hot sand, you know how painful it can be. Fido’s paw pads are very delicate, so he can easily get burns or blisters by walking or running on scorching surfaces. Your pet’s furry feet will be particularly delicate after he’s been swimming, so take extra care with him when he gets out of the water. We recommend using paw balm or wax to protect your four-legged buddy’s paws. You’ll also want to do a pawspection when you get home: sand can hide sharp objects, like broken glass or shells, that can cut your pup’s feet.

Swimming

Some dogs take to water like furry, four-legged ducks. Others . . . not so much. Before taking your canine buddy to the shore, make sure he knows how to swim. If your pet isn’t a natural swimmer, be sure to support him until he gets the hang of it. Never throw your dog into the water: Fido may figure out the doggy paddle, but he’ll likely be terrified of water afterwards. When your pup is ready for the beach, take care to keep him away from strong currents, riptides, and areas with steep drop-offs. Ask your vet for more safety tips.

Sunburns

Just like people, dogs can get sunburns. Pets with thin and/or pale fur are particularly susceptible. Ask your vet for advice on putting sunscreen on Fido.
