Does your canine buddy get super excited when you bring him a new toy? If so, that’s great! Toys and entertainment are both very important for Man’s Best Friend. Buying Fido’s playthings isn’t exactly rocket science, but there are some things to keep in mind. A Jacksonville, FL vet goes over some of them in this article.
Size is one of the most important things to consider here. Your pup could seriously hurt himself using a toy that is too big or too small for him! For instance, tennis balls are great for Labs, but can be choking hazards for larger dogs.
Keep in mind that dogs use different toys for different things. Puzzle toys are great for keeping our canine pals occupied (and out of mischief), and are excellent choices for dogs that stay alone during the day. Comfort toys, such as stuffed animals, can soothe and calm pups when they are nervous or lonely. Chew toys, as the name suggests, are great for dogs’ teeth and gums. And then there are toys that are just plain fun for Fido. Your pooch should have at least a few of each type.
Take a look at the label before purchasing your four-legged friend’s plaything. It’s best to generally stick with things that were made here in North America. Some countries have quite lax regulations on pet products, or even none at all.
Does your canine friend go through toys faster than you can replace them? If so, look for toys that are made to stand up to Fido’s roughhousing.
Pay attention to the condition of your pet’s toys. Dogs use their mouths to play, so Fido’s things will probably get crusty and gross sooner rather than later. Some things, such as tennis balls and stuffed animals, can be machine washed. Others, such as rubber toys, can be scrubbed with a toothbrush and then put into the dishwasher. When things start to look really worn, discreetly toss and replace them.
If your dog tends to change his ‘favorites’ often, or just goes through his toys very fast, you may want to consider getting him a subscription box. Seeing Fido get excited over his ‘mail’ is super cute!
