Is your cat aged seven or older? If so, Fluffy is approaching her senior years. While your furball may always think of herself as a kitten, her needs will change a little over time. Here, a Jacksonville, FL vet discusses keeping Fluffy purring in her golden years.
Cats are very sleepy little furballs. Senior cats can spend up to 20 hours a day napping. Offer Fluffy lots of cozy napping spots. You may want to set out pet ramps or footstools to help her reach her favorite places.
Playing will benefit Fluffy both physically and mentally. Take a few minutes a day to hold a laser pointer or wand toy for your kitty. Don’t worry about overexerting your kitty: if she gets tired, she’ll just lay down.
Older cats sometimes develop issues with their vision. Keeping a nightlight on can help Fluffy get around more easily at night.
Get Fluffy a litterbox with low sides. This may be easier for her to get in and out of than a regular one. If you have multiples floors in your home, keep extras on every level. That way, your furball won’t have to use the stairs as much.
Proper veterinary care is very important! Keep up with Fluffy’s veterinary appointments. Regular exams give your vet a basic overview of your kitty’s health, and make it much easier to spot minor changes that could signify the onset of a health issue. At home, watch for signs of illness, such as hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.
Senior kitties sometimes have trouble reaching their whole bodies to groom themselves. Help Fluffy out by brushing her gently.
Kitties sometimes get confused and forgetful as they age. Fluffy may forget where the litterbox is, or get ‘stuck’ in a corner. Your cat may meow loudly to vocalize her distress at these times. Just try to comfort her as much as you can.
Senior cats are just as cute and lovable as kittens! Spend lots of time with Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved and safe. Just be very gentle when you pick your furball up or put her down.
