June is Social Petworking Month! One of the best things about the popularity of the internet, at least in our opinion, is the endless supply of cute pet pictures and funny animal videos we can find online. As it turns out, social media has also had quite an effect on Fluffy and Fido. A local vet offers some insight on this below.
You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to post adorable pet pictures. However, if you wanted one, Social Petworking Day definitely fits the bill. The unofficial holiday was created to help increase adoptions for homeless pets. Want to help? Share posts about local pets that are looking for homes. It may only take a few keystrokes to change a pet’s life! Even liking photos or posts made by local shelters will help. Although the actual algorithms are still quite mysterious, liking a post often helps it achieve more visibility, so that more people see it.
Does your cat or dog have a habit of looking absolutely adorable, only to move as soon as you get your camera? Consider downloading a pet photo app. Many of these have presets that do a good job at taking animal photos. We also would recommend choosing a background that brings out your pet’s fur … unless, of course, you have a black cat and you are going for that ‘kitty void’ look that only shows Fluffy’s eyes.
Much networking is done online these days. That being so, this is an especially good time to offer some information about interacting with pets in real life. If you come across someone with a cute dog that seems friendly, it’s okay to ask if you can pet it. And remember to never do this with working dogs or pups that seem uneasy.
More than a few of our furry friends have their own social media pages. There are even some pets that qualify as bona-fido social media celebrities, such as the impossibly cute hedgehog, Azuki. You can also find many social media accounts made by celebrities for their own pets. Some of those ‘influencers’ include the pets of Paris Hilton, Amanda Seyfried, and Matthew Perry. If your furry friend has a social media account, share some social petworking posts this month!
